Interpretation in Practice - Field Trip
Swan Valley & Guildford
We have developed a half day field trip that will expose you to a range of interpretive experiences. Starting with a lunch including native foods and an Aboriginal cultural experience at Maalinup Gallery in the Swan Valley, the group will move to Guildford to learn about one of WA's olderst towns and to see the new interpretation that has been put in place. The aim of the field trip is to provide delegates with a range of experiences and for them to identify ways in which the interpretative experience can be enhanced using interpretation methods. Participants will learn from each other and share knowledge and experience.

Interpretation Planning Workshop - FULL
Department of Parks & Wildlife, Kensington
Lisa Brochu & Tim Merriman will present a one day workshop on how to develop an interpretation plan. This workshop will provide an overview of interpretive planning, giving participants a basic framework for approaching a planning project, based on the book by Lisa Brochu, Interpretive Planning: the 5-M Model for Successful Planning Projects. Using a combination of discussion, participatory activities and examples from around the world, Tim and Lisa will share the principles of sound interpretative planning and how to apply them in various situations. Participants will work on developing concise mission statements, goals and objectives; identifying audience characteristics and the market climate for programs; clarifying messages with a thematic approach; assessing the overall visitor experience; and using all this information to determine the most effective media for delivering selected messages to specific audiences in support of agency objectives. While this one-day workshop won't make you an expert interpretive planner, it will demystify the process and products association with interpretive planning and help you get started on your own planning projects.
