Gary Muir WOW Wilderness Experiences, Walpole

I was honoured to win the FACET Golden Guide Award in 2003 after nearly a decade of guiding with WOW Wilderness EcoCruises, based in the heart of the Walpole Wilderness. Now, another decade or so later I still enjoy the daily challenge of enthusiastically interpreting the latest stories of the natural sciences and cultural values to a range of international and Australian visitors, students our local communities.

Since I joined my Dad 20 years ago we have personally shared stories, entertained and enhanced the understanding and awareness of our world to around 150 000 people. WOW recognises the importance of guiding, as does FACET, and we also invest in future guides, helping teach and inspire prospective storytellers the secrets of successful interpretation.

Yes, this has been an important role as a FACET Golden Guide – to act as an ambassador and leader in the most rewarding and important communicative roles – not only in tourism but to actually help people make better informed decisions about the biosphere and their role within it. WA tourism really can become the ultimate enjoyable ecotourism expereince as long as we identify, recognise and invest in quality guiding. FACET’s Golden Guide Award is helping facilitate this exciting future for our state’s natural and cultural tourism.
